Paintings and some sketches. 1972-2022
8 September-22 October
First exhibition of Rosa Torres (Valencia, 1948) in the gallery Fernández-Braso, who was a part of, since the early seventies and up until the end of the group of artists of the gallery Sen (1969-2009) of Madrid.
The exhibition covers the entire trajectory of Rosa Torres through a selection of key works −paintings, drawings, designs and sculptures-
made from 1972 to the present. 50 years of activity explained and developed in the catalog published on the occasion of the exhibition by the curator and professor of the University of Murcia Isabel
Tejeda, curator of “Outside of the canon. The pop artists in the collection” (Site a highlight of the Reina Sofia Museum) and co-curator of “Mishap. Half a century of artists valencian (1929-1980)”, IVAM, Valencia, 2018. In his text, we read explanations such as the following:
“Torres is defined independent from the beginning, risking taking a personal journey that will be the basis, in an almost organic way, of some formulas
linguistic immediately identifiable as your own”.
“In the face of critical realism, they defended what they called “styling critic,” a painting that rejected the speeches “panfletarios”
to opt for a formal investigation of the discipline itself, on the language”.
“Is positioned in the custody of an artistic production that speaks of the office, which runs on the painting itself, which is not illustrated
political speeches or connects with the critical realism of those years. He defended the autonomy of plastic that connected it with the modernism –in
his career will be on the other hand an appointment constant - and that anticipated the attitude advocated by the artists of the 80's: “the issue is a pretext to paint”.
Trained as an artist at the end of the decade of the 60's and early 70's, to Rosa Torres and his work defined the environment, the interests and concerns of those years
of changes and influences: the Art Optical and Pop in his international version (Warhol, Lichtenstein) and national Team (Chronic). The discussions about the effect of the painting as a medium of artistic expression. The problem of the authorship, the original and the copy
arising of the new reproductive techniques series. Theories about the function and limits of the pictorial language, including the dichotomies of figuration-abstraction,
formalism-informalism.
We added interest in the genre of landscape and the color of the mediterranean tradition and the feeling for nature experienced during
the youth of the artist in the Basque Country.
Also, the political commitment–social and conditioning professional and personal to be a woman artist in a time and a place that criminalizing such
condition. All of this results in a personal and recognizable work of Rosa Torres, at the time that highlights their merit in achieving some of the accomplishments and milestones of his long artistic career: his home,
painting, along with other artists, the sculptures of Computer Chronic in the early 70's, his participation in the 1976 Cross section of New Spanish Painting”, Hastings Gallery of the Spanish Institute, New York, his selection next to the artists José Abad, Francisco Cruz Castro, Eugenio Chicano, Josep
Guinovart in the Venice Biennale in 1982 or selecting it from the exhibition “Mishap. Half a century of artists valencian (1929-1980)”, IVAM, Valencia, 2018.
The exhibition is part of the Program, Opening in 2022, the joint inauguration of the art galleries association Art Madrid.
The exhibition will be open to the public from Thursday, September 8, at special times of 12 to 22 hours. The inauguration will be held,
