Gustavo Torner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gustavo Torner (Basin, 1925) meets 90 years old next month of July without barely notice the dozens of exhibitions, works, writings, monuments, designs, conferences, tips and lessons which have been creating and sharing from 50 years ago, just when he decided to quit to devote himself to the profession for which he had studied forestry engineer. In 1953, Torner was making sheets of botany for the second edition of the monumental&nbsp;<em>Forest Flora of Spain<\/em>; in 1961 took part in the VI Biennial of Sao Paulo and in 1962 at the XXXII Venice Biennale.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class='yrm-content yrm-content-1 yrm-content-hide' id='yrm-lTupS' data-id='1' data-show-status='false' data-after-action='' style=\"visibility: hidden;height: 0;\">\n\t\t\t<div id='yrm-inner-content-yrm-lTupS' class='yrm-inner-content-wrapper yrm-cntent-1'><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond being who discovered Cuenca Fernando Z\u00f3bel \u2014with what it meant to this country located at the margin of the progress\u2014 and beyond being a prominent member of the so-called &#034;group of Cuenca&#034;, Torner deserves our recognition for being one of those few people who worked to modernize and aerate a society and a country in need of impulses and guides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, this exhibition is, in the first place, as a token of appreciation, and a tribute to an artist who can be regarded as one of the &#034;fathers&#034; of Spanish contemporary art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition presented in the gallery Fern\u00e1ndez-Braso covers the years between 1983 and 2012. Many of the paintings and sculptures that are part of the exhibition had not been exposed ever and that is because, as the artist himself indicates, that simply have not had their chance, and not because they were more or less interesting or successful than others. In this work recognizes the plastic language that has been developed Torner. Abstract works of root and analytical trend of geometric, but not cold or distant. Rigorous in its approach. Imaginative in its composition. Energetic in color. Delicate in its texture. Neat in its execution and minimal in its final appearance. In them seems to combine the material and the spiritual. The natural and universal. The science and craftsmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the best text that has been written about Torner was the one that appeared in the book&nbsp;<em>Torner<\/em>, edited by us, by Editions Hopscotch, in 1978. In this text Fernando Z\u00f3bel wrote that &#034;... Torner does not have a style, but a style of thinking. Your do is a result of their style of thinking, and for that do you have to your service, and employs all the rich variety of techniques, from the most traditional to the most original and surprising. Their concepts change and they change their techniques. What doesn&#039;t change is the mental process of Torner (a mental process argued in visual terms, of course). This mental process is the style of Torner. It is a style clear, subtle, sharp, elliptical, daring, sensual, and extremely intelligent. Once recognized, it is unmistakable. &#034;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1967, Alfred H. Barr, founder of the MoMA, I was in Cuenca visiting the Museum of Abstract Art, recently opened. It is not difficult to think him next to Torner on the terrace of his home, suspended above the gorges, overwhelmed by the beauty that unfolds before their eyes, while I listened to Torner say that &#034;art does not exist, does not exist as a thing, and I think that even as a concept. What there is are works of art. And the works of art are, first of all, or at least primarily, physical objects&#034;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because that is what has been dedicated Torner. To make physical objects.
